Glaucoma Surgery Aftercare Tips

You’ve finally had your glaucoma treatment - now it’s time to relax and allow your eyes some time to recover. It is essential to take special care to protect your eyes from injury by taking specific precautions after glaucoma surgery.

Glaucoma surgery recovery is a fairly long process - most patients are fully healed within 3-6 weeks - and so rest and recuperation should be your priority during this time.

In this helpful blog post, we at My-iClinic have provided some tips to ensure a speedy and healthy recovery period.

Taking Precautions After Glaucoma Surgery

The day after surgery, you can shower however you will need to be careful to avoid any chemicals (including shampoo and body wash) going in your eyes. This is especially important for the first week of glaucoma surgery recovery.

You should always wear your glasses during the daytime. If you find your eyes are feeling sensitive to light, you can wear sunglasses to reduce any discomfort. However, you can continue to read and watch TV during this time.

When considering how to sleep after glaucoma surgery, you should remember that you should wear your eye shield at night for a minimum of 2 weeks, or as long as you are advised to by your surgeon.

You will need to get into a strict routine of using your eye drops as instructed whilst going through recovery from laser eye surgery for glaucoma. You may benefit from creating a chart to keep track of this or downloading an app to help you remember to take your drops. Always wash your hands before applying your eye drops to avoid infections.

What Should I Avoid After Glaucoma Surgery?

During recovery from laser eye surgery for glaucoma, it is important not to bend over or do any strenuous activities such as biking, jogging, upside-down yoga or weight lifting until your surgeon has approved it.

We also strongly advise not putting pressure on your eyes for at least three weeks as, by putting pressure on your eye, you are at risk of disrupting the healing process.

You should not wear contact lenses until you have the all-clear from your surgeon. We strongly recommend this as wearing contacts can have an impact on the healing process of your eyes during glaucoma surgery recovery.

Additionally, you should not wear eye makeup for at least two weeks - we also advise avoiding the use of face cream.

In terms of applying your eye drops during the glaucoma surgery recovery period, it’s best to avoid touching the tip of the bottle with your fingers. You should also make sure that the tip of the bottle does not touch your eye.
